What are eyelid lumps and bumps?
The eyelids can develop a variety of lumps, the majority of which are benign — including cysts, styes, small papillomas, skin tags and cholesterol deposits (xanthelasma). Occasionally a lesion needs closer assessment to make sure there is nothing more serious.
When treatment may be considered
Assessment or removal is considered if a lump is uncomfortable, enlarging, recurrent, affecting your vision or appearance, or looks in any way unusual. Any lesion that is changing or persistent should be checked.
Your consultation
Miss Paul examines the lesion and eyelid and advises whether it can simply be reassured, treated or removed, and whether any removed tissue should be sent for laboratory analysis (histology).
Your treatment
Many eyelid lumps can be removed with a minor procedure under local anaesthetic; the approach depends on the type, size and location. Where appropriate, removed tissue is sent for analysis for added reassurance.
Recovery
Minor procedures usually heal quickly, with some bruising or swelling that settles over days. You will be given aftercare advice, and recovery varies between individuals.
Risks and complications
Risks can include bruising, minor scarring, recurrence or, rarely, infection. Miss Paul will discuss these before any procedure.
