Entropion and Ectropion surgery

What are entropion and ectropion?

Entropion and ectropion are eyelid malpositions, most often affecting the lower lid. In entropion the eyelid turns inwards so the lashes rub against the eye, while in ectropion the eyelid turns outwards, away from the eye. Both are frequently age-related and can cause irritation, watering, redness and discomfort.

When treatment may be considered

Surgery is considered when symptoms such as rubbing, watering, soreness or redness persist, or when the surface of the eye is at risk. Correcting the eyelid position relieves symptoms and protects the eye.

Your consultation

Your consultation includes an examination of the eyelids and ocular surface to identify the cause and plan the appropriate correction.

Your treatment

Correction is typically a day-case procedure under local anaesthetic to tighten and reposition the eyelid. The precise technique depends on the underlying cause.

Recovery

Some bruising and swelling for a week or two is usual and settles gradually; you will be given aftercare advice and any necessary drops. Recovery varies between individuals.

Risks and complications

Risks can include bruising, swelling, asymmetry, recurrence or, rarely, more significant issues. Miss Paul will discuss these with you before surgery.

Frequently Asked Questions

They are most commonly age-related, due to changes in the tissues that support the eyelid. Other causes include previous surgery, scarring or certain conditions, which your consultation will assess.
Temporary measures such as lubricants or taping may ease symptoms in the short term, but surgery is usually the definitive way to correct the eyelid position.
It is carried out under local anaesthetic, so the area is numbed and you should not feel pain, although you may be aware of gentle pressure.
Bruising and swelling usually settle over one to two weeks. You will be given aftercare advice, and recovery varies between individuals.
Correction is usually long-lasting, but recurrence is possible over time as the tissues continue to age. This will be discussed at your consultation.
